Dr. Kenneth R. Hansen, O.D. "I view optometry as my life's ministry from the Lord. It is challenging each day as I seek to meet the needs of my patients. Dr. Hansen attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, and the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. He graduated from the University of Houston with his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1974. He is licensed in the state of Iowa and is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Iowa Optometric Association. Dr. Hansen served in the military for 17 years as both a Naval officer and the optometrist for the Iowa Army National Guard. He founded his current practice in October of 1977 and has been a practicing optometrist for over 36 years. He specializes in fitting hard-to-fit contact lenses, as well as providing comprehensive eye exams, co-managing surgery patients and seeing patients with primary care needs. Dr. Hansen is married, has three married children and 4 grandsons, Josiah, Jarrett, Joel, and Jack. He has two granddaughters, Violet, and Jessalyn, and a grandchild coming from China in the near future. "Our office has always been a family affair.... Dr. Pietig is a native of Madrid, Iowa, and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Integrative Physiology, She then received her Doctorate in 2007 from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Dr. Pietig is involved in the diagnosis and treatment of all patients and specializes in working with those patients experiencing dry eyes, diabetes, high blood pressure and glaucoma as well as many childhood conditions, such as lazy eye and amblyopia. She also takes a special interest in unique and difficult to fit contact lenses. Dr. Pietig has published articles on bifocal contact lenses and is a writer for the American Optometric Association's Contact Lens and Cornea Section in their monthly newsletter. Dr. Pietig enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, cheering for the Hawkeyes, attending church functions and staying active with martial arts, golfing or any outdoor activity. Susan Frein, A.B.O.C. Certified Optician and Low Vision Specialist Ankeny Family Vision Center is delighted to announce that Susan Frein joined our staff in December 2010. Susan comes to us with 11 years of experience in the optical field. She has worked both in ophthalmological and optometric practices. She is an ABOC certified optician and also specializes in low vision which offers help to the visually challenged. Susan has lived in Ankeny for the past 11 years and is a native of Sac City, Iowa. Besides reading, her husband, Randy, and their six children, Joe, Katie, Frank, Austin, Alex, and Nate keep her busy outside the office. Barbara Lightfoot, A.B.O.C & N.C.L.E Certified Optician and Contact Lens Technician Joining the staff in May 2008, Barbara brings to the office more than 20 years of optical experience. Since being certified by the American Board of Opticians in 1987, she has gained much experience in the filling of prescription eyewear and contact lenses. Her knowledge in eye care expands to low vision which offers help for the partially sighted, frame styling, and training others on the care & use of contact lenses. She is one of the opticians on staff trained to custom fit your eyewear upon delivery and make adjustments to them as needed. She enjoys movies, road trips, kayaking, and the outdoors. Ron Bolar, ABOC Certified Optician Ron Bolar brings 28 years of optical experience to Ankeny Family Vision Center. He has been certified by the American Board of Opticians since 1987. He thrives on taking exacting measurements and adjusting frames to ensure a custom fit for every patient. He truly enjoys helping patients see better by helping them find the frame that is just right for them. Ron's wife, Cindy, is a 2nd grade teacher in the DSM Public Schools. They have four children: Evan is in the US Navy serving on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln; Tim manages a consignment clothing store, The Loft, in Ames; Eric is in the US Marine Corps serving in Okinawa, Japan; and Jessica is a Junior at Gilbert High School involved in band, volleyball, and golf. In his spare time, you will find Ron spoiling their dog, Willy, and cats, Sasha and Felicia. You will also find him landscaping, listening to music, watching movies, doing home improvement projects, detailing cars (1949 Plymouth!), and spending time with family and friends. Iwalani Belisario, Front Office Coordinator
 Iwa (Eva) joined Ankeny Family Vision Center in September 2002. When you call our office, you will often speak with her. Iwa is here to welcome you, check you in and see that all is taken care of before you see one of our doctors. Iwa is married to Richard and they have three daughters, Weilani, Leilani, and Iwalani, who is now a sophomore and star volleyball player at Grandview University. Iwa enjoys sports, especially volleyball. She and her family are very involved in their church, Capitol City Baptist. Bethany Larsen, Patient Care Coordinator Bethany started off the new year with us. She comes with a variety of wonderful skills. Bethany earned a Bachelor's Degree from Faith Baptist Bible College in 2006. She loves family time, traveling, cooking, a good exercise workout, coffee shops, beaches, bargains, authentic Italian foods, laughing, and just life in general. Her real passion is people and I think you will see that when you meet her. She teaches Sunday School at Faith Baptist Church in Cambridge and also works with the teens. Amy Capon, Doctor's Assistant; C.P.O. Certified Para-Optometric Amy joined our staff in May of 2006 and serves as one of Dr. Hansen's and Dr. Pietig's assistants. Amy graduated from Faith Baptist Bible College in 2006, with a Bachelor's Degree in Administrative Assistance. She became certified as a Para-Optometric by the American Optometric Association in April 2008. Her responsibilities primarily involve patient care by pre-testing all patients. Other duties include performing specialized testing. Amy enjoys being an aunt, spending time outdoors, staying actively involved at Faith Baptist Church of Cambridge, and curling up in her papasan chair with a hot cup of coffee watching Doris Day movies. Amy Marie Schendel, Doctor's Assistant; A.B.O.C. Certified Optician; C.P.O. Certified Para-Optometric Amy Marie brought 15 years experience in optical when she joined the AFVC staff in September 2009. She is an ABO certified optician and a CPO certified Para Optometric. She is primarily involved in patient care by assisting in the business office with insurance and in pre-testing for Dr. Hansen. Amy resides here in Ankeny with her husband, Tom, and daughter, Ella, and baby girl to be born in October. She is involved with the children’s music program with First Family Church here in Ankeny, where she is able to utilize her BA in Church Music from Nebraska Christian College. Becky Gleason, Business Office Manager; Insurance & Billing Coordinator  Becky has worked for AFVC for over 6 years. She has over 25 years experience working in the medical office in various positions. Becky enjoys working with families to understand their benefits and maximize their insurance. Becky has been married to Mike for over 32 years and they have 2 grown daughters and 1 son. Jennifer is married to Chad. Emily is a cosmetologist and has a little girl, Hannah.
