Blue Light Risks

Blue Light Technology seems to be a hot topic these days.  Do you understand what this technology is?  Are you concerned for you or your family?  Ankeny Family Vision Center is "on top" of this and will be happy to provide the education and services needed to help you determine the best way to protect your family!

Did you realize that exposure to High Energy Blue Light has the ability to damage your eyes and impact negatively your overall health?  Blue Light is everywhere - even everyday activities may place you in direct contact with this harmful light.

The use of computers/tablets, gaming devices, smart phones, televisions and CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) bulbs all put you in front of this Blue Light.  Even outdoors, you need to be aware of the impact the sun's UV rays have on your eyes.  All of these are reasons for our recommendation for protection during work and play.

There are vision signals that can indicate whether you are, or a family member is, experiencing an issue from Blue Light exposure.  These may include tired eyes, sensitivity to light, loss of sharp contrast vision, and increased difficulty seeing at night or discomfort with glare.

Blue Light may also have an effect on your overall health.  Some symptoms to watch for are increased fatigue, difficulty staying forcused, difficulty falling asleep/staying asleep, headaches and migraines.  Even some behavioral issues can be a symptom in children.

If these symptoms or issues are left uncorrected, there are some possible risks to your future visual experience as well...early onset of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Drs. Hansen, Pietig, and Young make every effort to insure that the patients that enter our office are educated about Blue Light exposure to safeguard their long-term experience.  They have dedicated themselves to providing products and services to make sure your eye health is protected from harmful UV and Blue Light sources.
